It's a Myth-tery

After the great return to form with New Police Story, Jackie Chan's latest Hong Kong film The Myth is now available on DVD.

Jackie plays Jack, an archeologist adventurer, who keeps having vivid dreams about being a Qin dynasty General protecting a beautiful Princess. His scientist friend William (Tony Leung) tells him about a potential anti-gravity source (!) and the pair set off to India to search for it in an ancient temple (so far so Armour of God). As the film progresses we see more of Jack's previous life as the General and that tale of chivalry and love for the Princess is interwoven with the present day action.

The Myth is entertaining nonsense but ultimately it left me disappointed. It could have been so much better. It's quite an ambitious film but it fails due to illogical plot devices and some poor special effects. On the plus side Jackie gets some sword fighting action, there's a fun chase in a glue factory and the idea of a gravity defying Heavenly Temple is good (think Terracotta Warriors but bigger). Korean actress Kim Hee-seon (the Princess) and Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat are both lovely to look at. No doubt they will have helped put bums on seats in Korea and India.
