Kicking against the pricks

Has anyone ever ridiculed your taste in music? Are you proud to be a Chris De Burgh fan or a secret Phil Collins easy lover? Fear not! If you are a last.fm user you can measure how mainstream your overall musical taste is with the Mainstream-O-Meter.

It comes as no surprise to me that I'm calculated to be only 5.86% mainstream. It's arguable that less mainstream = more 'cool'. If this is true then 5.86% is cause for celebration at the Polysics gig I'm going to tonight! Of course my low percentage may also indicate that I'm a sad loner, existing on the fringe of society.

Big Brother is recording my listening habits
As a small caveat, let me add that the Mainstream-O-Meter is just calculating a percentage based on music played on my PC. Who knows what 'guilty pleasures' I might listen to on my living room hi-fi? Perhaps I'm really more mainsteam than most?
