The Lakes - Part 1 of 4

Last week, feeling a little bored with the idea of doing not a lot at home, I decided to make a break for a few days up to the Lake District, Cumbria. The last time I visited The Lakes was on a school Geography trip when I was 12 or 13. Why had it taken so long for me to decide to return? Probably the idea that it's a long way to travel to get rained on - the Lake District is the wettest area in England. Now, with time on my hands, I felt the urge to walk the fells and glacial valleys once more, even though summer had departed - sod the October weather!

So, on Saturday I made the lonnnnnnnnng drive from London up the M1 and M6 to Ambleside, a lovely small town nestled in the Cumbrian mountains. As soon as I had settled into my hotel I knew that I'd made the right decision to come. My God, the scenery, the fresh air! Wonderful.

The house on the bridge, Ambleside
Ambleside, with it's prime central location, great restaurants and pubs, was the perfect base for my excursions over the next three days.

Lakes are "right on my doorstep", and we visit there frequently.

So glad you enjoyed your visit.
